Tuesday 20th
Woke by nurse at half past sparrows fart so they can take my bp, temp and blood O2 .. why?
Breakfast then physio came and showed me how to use zimmer over distance i.e. to get to loo – so liberating – although, gonna be a bit tricky getting down and onto loos at home, will cross that bridge. Mirza opposite poor. chap has had lung cancer twice, 3 heart attacks, is a one leg amputee and now has a broken neck .. and he still believes in god (Islam). He clearly is a survivor.
He also felt the need to say ‘sorry Richard if I am disturbing’ you but then talked at me for hours about his life (electronic engineer that has worked on offshore platforms), love of gadgets, investing etc.
Physio hinted that they don’t intend operating and then mid afternoon junior doctor in orthopaedic team confirmed the plan thus:
I have a fairly unstable fracture of the hip socket (acetabulum), as well as a fracture of the pubic ramus (part of the pelvis). The fracture extends into the hip joint itself and is likely to have damaged the cartilage, meaning I can expect arthritis in that joint and may ultimately need a hip replacement.
After pelvic team at St Mary’s reviewed conclusion is they aren’t likely to operate and will re-scan on Monday next to see if I am healing – may even get home tomorrow. The challenge is where to do the x-ray if I am at home as they cannot request one outside of this hospital / trust. If they are pleased with re-scan I might even be allowed to start partially loading left leg. Fingers crossed. Skiing in January definitely off but physio reckons India is a firm possibility (15 weeks away) he did at no loading for 4 to 6 weeks might be an option depending on Monday scan so pretty debilitating all said and done. Feeling of absolute twattishness increasing by the hour.
She then came back and said she hadn’t managed to talk to consultant or registrar in her team so hopefully tomorrow I will find out and may get home,
Carla came over and helped me shower which was great so I felt human again plus she brought me a working cable for charging my stuff – then – after she had gone Emily came by with lots of treats including rich tea, a crunchie, grapes and cathedral city small bites.
Em left about 2030 and I settled down to watch Lucifer on Netflix, they turned some of the lights out at 1015 so I switched off and tried to sleep. Had to ask for all lights to be turned off at 0100 – two new people in ward and out of aurhery it seemed so a little of back and forth – hospital is very bad for you.
Pretty horrible seeing peoples various ailments and the ins and outs of life on a ward – goodness I need to get out of here soonest.
