A long ‘break’ from updating

Friday 9th October to Sunday 18th October

No real reason I haven’t been updating just got out of habit a bit so not sure I can remember everything that has happened these past 11 days but I will try a potted summary.

Had a nice weekend 10th/11th – tried to go for a self guided walk on the Saturday with Carla in Kensington but trains were buggered so we abandoned that idea at Edgware Road and walked from Paddington to Bond Street via ‘Slovaki’ chicken flatbread at Paddington Market Halls – I do not recommend it. We saw Sindhu Vee in the evening at Palladium – she was excellent.

Sunday was an at home day as I recall, Quins were on TV and conspired to lose against Sale and I made roast beef with really good Yorkshires – been having trouble getting my Yorkshire’s to rise but these ones were a success – I think due to not over adding the milk.

Monday was tennis with Carla and her group followed by Regents Street Cinema and ‘my darling Clementine’ – a Henry Fonda movie, was lovely – kind of innocent despite all the carnage and concluding gunfight at ok corral.

Tuesday (I think) I went to Natural History Museum – joined up in fact and visited members ‘Anning room’ then took in the sea monsters of the jurassic exhibition.

Took bus home as far as Marble Arch then walked back through Mayfair to Bond Street, lovely back streets and cafes and bars.

Wednesday is a blank, Thursday too. Friday I went to the London museum at Docklands and did the top two galleries about the formation of the docks and history of slave trade.

Saturday I had gym with Rudy and after we planned to go to Sothebys but it was closed. So instead we did a bit of a self guided walk – we ended up for lunch at Chisou – the Japanese off new bond street – always good – the miso soup and tempura in particular are to die for.

In the evening we went to Ronnie Scotts to see ‘a new shades of spain’ by a Spanish / French ensemble – shades of spain is by Miles Davis quite short so they added in some of their own compositions and a flamenco dancer – it was excellent. Part of celebrations of Miles Davis 100 years since birth year.

We got home and Carla retired to bedroom to start watching the new Jimmy McGovern – Time – too grim for me so I watched strictly on catchup then my recorded (and joint favourite war movie of all time) – where eagles dare, bedded down very late at 2am.

On Sunday I cycled to Quins on eBike as trains all knackered. Second tier European Cup match against RC Vannes (division two French team). We won convincingly but … see above. It rained a bit and was wet as I cycled home and as I approached Richmond Bridge in a split second and I made a dickhead decision to bump onto pavement to go around the tight to pavement traffic – unfortunately bike did not mount curve and instead I flew off slamming down onto my left side / hip and leg.

It was nasty- passers by came quickly to my aide – i was on my side on floor and couldn’t stand felt it tight in back of left leg at top and bladder stinging even. Anna a young girl asked if I needed an ambulance so she dialled them in / a lovely Turkish couple stayed with me too and bought me a water and another lovely young lady, Alex wheeled my eBike to the secure bike-racks at Richmond station (I kept keys as luckily they are snap shut). Ambulance arrived after an age and by then I was pretty chilly, shivering. They tried to get me to load bear on left but couldn’t so they gurneyed me onto ambulance and ferried me to West Middlesex A&E, arriving about 1645.

VM’d Emily and Carla who met me there, Em drove over with treats and Carla had to take Liz line and two buses.

Was seen off and on and at about 9 pm they did a CT scan. Eventually I was told I had a number of fractures and needed to be admitted In fact next day the seriousness hit home when orthopaedic consultant advised this:

I have a fairly unstable fracture of the hip socket (acetabulum), as well as a fracture of the pubic ramus (part of the pelvis). The fracture extends into the hip joint itself and is likely to have damaged the cartilage, meaning I can expect arthritis in that joint and may ultimately need a hip replacement.

The specialists at St Mary’s Paddington will review the scans tomorrow (Tuesday) and decide whether surgery is needed to stabilise the fractures. If so, that could happen here, at St Mary’s or at the Royal London. In the meantime, absolutely no weight on my left leg, although I may be able to stand on my right with a frame and some help. Nothing more will happen today, so hopefully I’ll have a clearer picture tomorrow.

Fuck!

After the CT scan Em and Carla went home and I was held on A&E and transferred to Osterley 1 ward at about 0330 … can you believe .. was made comfy then slept fitfully for rest of night.
