30th June
Today we are at the Cies Islands with beach towels and swimmers packed. That said nowadays I am a complete wimp with cold water. To think when I was younger I would swim off the beach in Blackpool ffs ! Not so now. Water is muy fresco so no swimming for this wimp. What a beautiful place no cars and a coral esque beach. We plonked ourselves down and listened to the sea breaking .. well and Carla constantly chatting and pointing stuff out – the soundtrack of my life now. I would have preferred it to be ‘Afternoon Delight’ by the Starland Vocal Band – a tune that always made me happy when I worked as slave labour (£3 a day !) in a Richmond Camping Shop in the 70s but – no – I get auto-correct Carla as mine. We walked off the beach after 90 mins to a lovely hut restaurant – Carla has discovered a sin-gas drink she likes: Refresco Limon. The restaurant is a typically chaotic Spanish place everyone sat down before they start taking orders at 1330 – Carla stressing. I am so chilled I am almost horizontal. My new trick – photograph the menu and load to chatGPT for a translation – my god tech nowadays whatever next (although I already have iPods pro 3 that translate in your ear – a babel fish made real – Douglas Adams was a prophet of future tech, clearly). Lots of bloody phones on speaker – ffs again – people eh… I am having sardines and a salad Carla the sea bream or ‘Sargo de Cies’ (the island speciality according to chatGPT).
GEN X or wetfgta (work it out) parents and their kids – ‘I have an absolute right to eat – drink – go to a bookshop – a library – a cemetery even – and if my kid is screaming then tough shit’ – aghhhhh.
Carla has told me about 10 times now to say that I fell off the eBike yesterday. We were at the end of a trail and I needed to do a u-ey .. I had full power on, turned and locked the handlebars and off I went AoT – camera spectacles and testicles all intact … phew. Don’t do that.
Veran the beer of the day is Mahou – tastes like every other lager you’ve ever had but meets the most important criterion of a lager (brewed at constant temperature) and served chilled – is lager the German word for cold? When I was a brewer I was told it was.
After lunch we laid on the beech (post an almond magnum each), boated back to Vigo for a hot walk to hotel – lovely shower to wash the sand off then out to a recommended bar but it was closed so we went next door – pretty good – had three tapas but some old geezer at the bar kept whistling to himself – almost worse than iPhones on speaker .. actually worse than. correction not the old geezer bloody barman / owner who btw is a miserable twat to boot.
Actually Veran we had a white wine tonight an €18 euro albariño.
