Up at 0830 for our guru at 1015 that we then realised is tomorrow so clashes with our planned trip to the Cies Islands so … ChatGPT to the rescue and we did it ourselves. Very interesting especially the bit about the ‘English Telegraph Company’ and how they connected the first submarine cables from the South of England to Vigo then across the Atlantic to the Americas … who knew. Also interesting was that the Germans had a cable across the Atlantic from Vigo too and during WWII the British and Germans sabotaged each others and Vigo was a hot bed of espionage.
In the afternoon we spent €80 and hired two eBikes – cycled past all the shipbuilders to the bay of Bouzas and in the village there found a lovely little bar – restaurant for lunch – Veran – Estrella again I am afraid plus the menu de dias for €15 a pop – Gazpacho for Carla, cheese and ham on toast for me followed by pea and cod risotto for Carla and a la planché veggies and goats cheese for me rounded off by a lovely arroz con leche and basque cheescake. Yummy.
The only complaint is that the Spanish have the English disease too whereby kids play on their mobile phones with sound on and adults listen to calls on their speakers grrr – so annoying.
After lunch we cycled along by the sea after almost joining a motorway – the cycling signage is poor here and whilst there are some cycle tracks they abruptly end and dump you on a main road or roundabout that can be tricky to navigate. Vigo remains a ‘car is king’ place and is not that cycling friendly road wise and hill wise. We relaxed (slept) on the beach for an hour then cycled back – another adventure (see above). Given we were stuffed from lunch we had a lazy night in and watched a movie on the laptop. Overall a lovely day.
